NHL Rookie Of The Year Finalists Announced
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Gabriel Landeskog and Adam Henrique were named finalists for the Calder Trophy, the league's rookie of the year award.
Nugent-Hopkins, a center with the Oilers, missed time earlier this year with two separate shoulder injuries, but still finished with 52 points in 62 games.
Nugent-Hopkins was the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, and only turned 19 in April.
Henrique, a center with the Devils, had 51 points and a plus-8 in 74 games.
"It's well-deserved," Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, who won the award in 1994, said to The (Newark) Star-Ledger.
Landeskog, a left wing with the Avalanche, also had 52 points and played every game this season, finishing with a plus-20.
Smith, Stamkos, Crosby Named 'Three Stars'
Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith took the NHL's First Star honor this past week as he put together a lengthy shutout streak and led the team to its first division title and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
Lightning center Steven Stamkos became the first player in four years to reach the 60-goal plateau, earning Second Star, while Penguins center Sidney Crosby concluded his regular season in dominant fashion, extending his point-scoring streak to five games to be named Third Star.
Simmonds, Chara, Smith Named 'Three Stars'
The goal he scored against the Senators on Saturday to spark a comeback by his Flyers wasn't the sole reason forward Wayne Simmonds won First Star of the Week honors.
But when you manage to put the puck in the net using your face to deflect a shot, you deserve your fair share of credit.
Simmonds scored four other goals this past week in much less painful fashion to help the Flyers make a surge in the standings. Also honored by the League on Monday were Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, who was named Second Star, and Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, awarded Third Star.
